Diesel-Tank “Algae”: Why Namibian Heat Breeds It and How to Stop It
What the growth actually is
Fleet mechanics call it diesel algae; it is really a mat of bacteria and fungi living at the interface between the fuel and the water underneath it. The water comes from condensation: a steel tank in Namibia breathes hot, humid air by day and cools sharply by night, and every cycle wrings a little more water out of the air and into the tank bottom.
What it costs
The mat sheds sludge that blinds filters and scores injectors. On a truck that means a roadside callout; on a fishing boat it means lost fuel flow at sea; on a standby generator it means failure at the precise moment the generator exists for. One contaminated bulk tank infects every vehicle that fills from it.
The treatment
Chemicide No 7 is the biocide Cernol supplies for exactly this — the transporters segmentation sheet lists it for depot diesel tanks, and the fishing sheet for boats. Dose the storage tank so every fill is protected, shock-dose any vehicle or vessel tank that already carries growth, and change filters after the first treatment: killed growth still has to leave through them.
Make it routine, not rescue
The practical habit is dosing against fuel deliveries rather than the calendar — contamination arrives with fuel, and the delivery note is the natural trigger to record the dose. Depots that run this discipline simply stop having fuel-system episodes; the line item is small enough that most fleet managers forget it exists, which is the point.
