Anything whose failure hurts someone or voids a certificate: lifting lugs and spreader beams, pressure-adjacent repairs, structural members, reconditioned shafts and hooks, and any weld a client’s specification calls up for NDT. For everything else, testing is judgement — but the kit being on the shelf changes the judgement, because a five-minute penetrant check on a suspect weld costs nothing against a comeback. That is why the penetrant aerosols appear on the engineering sheet as consumable stock.

Both, at different levels. Any competent tradesperson can run the three-step process (996PB penetrant, 9PR5 remover, 9D1B developer) as a workshop screening tool to catch defects early. Formal certification — lifting gear, coded work — requires a qualified NDT practitioner whose interpretation carries the legal weight. The practical Namibian pattern: screen in-house with your own kit, book the certified inspector for the formal round, and hand him clean, prepared surfaces so his day rate buys inspection rather than preparation.

Clean, dry, bare metal: degrease with Solvene 33 and let it flash off completely, strip paint and scale (Ardrox 185 or Magnus 645 on ferrous parts, mechanical prep otherwise), and beware of smearing — aggressive grinding can fold metal over fine cracks and hide them from any penetrant. Moisture is the silent killer: a crack holding water will not take dye. Ten minutes of preparation is the difference between an inspection and a ritual.

Below 50 °C (not the site container roof shelf), shaken before use, within the batch shelf life, and logged against the jobs they tested — the batch number on the can belongs on the inspection record for traceability. Stock all three aerosols together and reorder when the developer runs low; developer always finishes first because it goes on last and covers the widest area.
