Three aerosols, three steps. First the red dye penetrant (Ardrox 996PB) is sprayed on the cleaned metal and given time to seep into any surface-breaking crack. Then the excess is wiped and flushed off with the remover (Ardrox 9PR5) — the dye stays only inside defects. Finally the white developer (Ardrox 9D1B) is sprayed on; it acts as blotting paper, drawing dye out of cracks as vivid red lines against the white background. A crack invisible to the naked eye becomes a line you can photograph for the inspection report.

Yes — penetrant testing only finds what it can reach, so the surface must be clean, dry and free of paint, scale, oil and smeared metal. Degrease first (Solvene 33 or MPC Degreaser, fully evaporated), remove scale or old paint mechanically or with Magnus 645 on ferrous work, and let everything dry — moisture in a crack blocks the penetrant. Rough grinding can smear metal over fine cracks, so finish critical surfaces appropriately before testing. The few minutes of preparation are the difference between a real inspection and a false “all clear”.
