Acids & Descalers for Mining in Namibia

On the mining belt, water is process equipment — and hard, saline Namibian water scales it relentlessly. The mining sheet’s first specialist entry is Chloracid 90 “cleaning of membrane filters”: inhibited acid chemistry protecting the most expensive consumable a water-constrained mine owns, with Dicafas powder covering the remote-site descaling behind it.

The local problems this range solves

  • Membrane filters scaling on hard, saline process water
  • Heat exchangers and cooling circuits losing efficiency to deposit
  • Remote sites where liquid-acid logistics are a hazard chain
  • Descaling schedules competing with production uptime
  • Acid safety systems for large, mixed crews

Compliance & documentation

Descaling chemistry on a mine runs under permit-to-work and environmental-disposal rules; documentation for both accompanies our supply.

Local tip

Log membrane pressure-drop weekly and set the descale trigger as a number — belt sites that descale on data run half the acid volume of sites that descale on complaints.

Acids & Descalers for mining: asked and answered

Why is membrane descaling the flagship acid job on Namibian mines?

Because membranes are where water scarcity and capital meet: RO and filtration membranes fouled by hardness scale lose flux, drive up pressure and energy, and cost serious money to replace — on sites where every cubic metre of water is accounted for. Chloracid 90’s inhibitor lets the acid dissolve the scale without attacking housings and hardware, restoring flux for the price of a circulation. The segmentation sheet lists this application by name; it is that central.

When does powder (Dicafas) beat liquid acid for a mine site?

Almost always at distance: Dicafas travels as a stable 25 kg powder up gravel roads that punish liquid drums, stores indefinitely in site heat, and dissolves into fresh working acid only at the point of use — which shortens the hazard chain from Windhoek to the descale job by its whole transport leg. Liquid Chloracid 90 wins for circulating pickles of fixed plant. Most belt sites end up stocking both, each for its geometry.

How is descaling scheduled against production?

By trend, ahead of failure: pressure-drop and temperature-approach logs on exchangers and membranes show scaling long before capacity visibly falls, and a descale slotted at the next maintenance window costs hours — while a scale-driven failure costs the window you didn’t plan. Cernol sizes the charge from system volume and water analysis so the window estimate is real. The alternative, descaling “when it struggles”, is how struggling becomes the operating state.

What does acid safety look like with big crews and contractors?

Systems, not vigilance: dedicated acid-handling PPE stored with the product, permit-to-work covering chlorine separation (no Sypo or other hypochlorite anywhere in the job zone — the gas risk is the one that kills), acid-into-water mixing enforced by procedure, and neutralise-and-flush as a signed step before recommissioning. We supply SDS-backed method guidance with each product; the mine’s safety system gives it teeth.
